Portfolio Night

 

Every spring Children’s work is shared and celebrated in a group with their family and friends. 

It is a time when families, teachers and children come together to wonder and think about who we are as individuals and as learners.

We think about what the idea of a school and learning can be about. 

It is a chance to celebrate, to consider and to reflect.

A shared value of why we do what we do.

Ms. Amash (one of Griffin’s teachers) and mommy are sharing how Griffin makes us laugh.

Wait, there’s still some snack left?  Let’s go get it!

A proud mommy listening to Griffin tell the group about his favorite piece from his portfolio.

Griffin is sharing with the group documentation of when Daddy came to the Discovery to read with friends.  “I don’t think you remember this but my daddy came to read to the class.  It was his birthday.  He read Roger the Jolly Pirate, and then we sang the pirate song.”

Ms. Amash dutifully documenting the group while Mr. Matt, the Parapro (aka teacher’s aide) listens to the group.

 

This was so much fun to see Griffin’s learning process.  He is a very active and hands on learner, and the studio is one of his favorite places to work.  I have dubbed this year his wire period because this is the medium he chooses to work with the most.  His teachers and I are amazed at his intensity and focus when working in the studio, especially since he can’t seem to keep his mouth or body quiet any other part of the day.  Thank goodness he is so charming.  Nobody gets too annoyed at his overzealousness to interject his perspective when he flashes you that smile of his.

The only disappointment of the evening was when Ms. Amash explained that I don’t get to have any of his portfolio until he graduates.  Good thing I’ve kept every piece of work that didn’t make it into his portfolio and was sent home.
